Demiurge is responding to the outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) through the appropriate use of our AI platform of discovering novel therapeutic solutions and predicting clinical trial outcomes.
In addition to the initial discovery of PI3K inhibitors as a novel candidate treatment for COVID-19 in our press release dated 14. February 2020, we hereby officially announce further discoveries along the lines of PI3K inhibitors:
- PI3K-p110α selective inhibitors would have a better efficacy and safety profile than PI3K-p110δ selective inhibitors for COVID-19.
- The typical side effects of pan-class or p110α-selective PI3K inhibitors in anticancer setting would have limited translatability in antiviral setting, especially so for COVID-19.
- PI3K-p110δ selective inhibitors + PD-1 inhibitor combination therapy would be a better therapeutic option than PD-1 inhibitor monotherapy for COVID-19 because PI3K-p110δ selective inhibitors can mitigate the excessive autoimmunity elicited by PD-1 inhibitors specifically for COVID-19.
- Drug efficacy/toxicity tested on SARS/MERS coronaviruses would have limited translatability on COVID-19, given the significant differences in epidemiologic characteristics, clinical features, and biological properties.
In endemic/pandemic settings, public interest in treatment availability and commercial interest in marketing exclusivity are usually misaligned, but we have no doubt that public interest must be prioritized because lives matter above all else.
We have thus chosen to announce this discovery to the public first without any delay in either applying for patent protection in secret or working with biopharmaceutical companies in private, so as to waive commercial interests once for all and to speed up cross-border concerted efforts to conduct human clinical trials of PI3K inhibitors for the benefits of millions of families that have been affected by COVID-19.
